Are You Getting the Internet Speed You Pay For?

Your plan says one number and your speed test says another. Enter what you pay for, run a 20-second test, and see what share of it you actually get. If it falls short, you also get a message you can send to your provider.

How the result is judged

The test measures your download speed from this site to the device you are using, then compares it with the plan you entered.

  • 90% or more: you are getting what you pay for.
  • 70% to 90%: close to your plan. A gap like this is normal because of Wi-Fi, other devices and network overhead.
  • 50% to 70%: noticeably below your plan. Repeat the test on a cable.
  • Under 50%: far below your plan. Test at different times, then contact your provider.

Why your speed can be below your plan

Providers advertise “up to” speeds. Several things between the provider and your screen can lower what you measure:

  • Wi-Fi. Distance, walls and interference cost speed. A cable removes that variable. See Wi-Fi vs Ethernet.
  • Other devices. Streams, backups and updates share the same line. Pause them before you test.
  • An old router or cable. Some older routers and cables cannot carry gigabit speeds.
  • A VPN. It adds a detour and usually costs speed. Turn it off for this test.
  • Busy hours. Shared networks can slow down in the evening.

How to get a fair measurement

  1. Connect the computer to the router with an Ethernet cable if you can.
  2. Close other apps and pause downloads on every device.
  3. Turn off any VPN.
  4. Run the test two or three times, at different times of day.
  5. If the result stays well below your plan on a cable, use the message above and contact your provider.

About this tool

The plan you type is saved only in your own browser so you do not have to retype it. It is never sent to us. The test uses the same method as the main CHECKiOX speed test.

Frequently asked questions

Am I getting the internet speed I pay for?

Enter your plan speed above and run the test. If you measure at least 90% of it, you are getting what you pay for. Between 70% and 90% is a normal gap. Below 50% is far under your plan.

Why is my internet slower than my plan?

Common causes are Wi-Fi, other devices using the line, an old router or cable, a VPN, and busy hours. Test on an Ethernet cable with other devices paused to rule most of these out.

Is advertised speed the same as real speed?

Not exactly. Providers advertise up to speeds. Real speed depends on your equipment, your Wi-Fi and the time of day. A wired test is the fairest comparison.

What should I tell my provider if my speed is too low?

Give them your plan speed, your measured speed, the date and time, and whether you tested on Wi-Fi or a cable. The tool creates a message with these details that you can copy.

Is my plan speed saved or shared?

It is saved only in your own browser so you do not have to retype it. It is not sent to CHECKiOX.
