What Is My IP Address?
This is the public IP address that websites see when you connect from this device.
Details your browser shares
These details come from your browser, and nothing here is stored by us.
We don't look up your city or internet provider, because we don't use a location database. If you are on a VPN or proxy, you will see the VPN's address, not your own.
What is an IP address?
An IP address is a number that identifies your connection on the internet, much like a return address on a letter. When you open a website, the site uses your IP address to know where to send the page.
Public vs private IP addresses
Your public IP address is the one shown above. Your internet provider gives it to your router, and every device on your home network shares it. Inside your home, each device also has a private address, usually starting with 192.168 or 10, that websites never see.
IPv4 vs IPv6
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.9. There are only about 4.3 billion of them, so a newer format, IPv6, was created. IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::1. Many connections now use both.
Why your IP address changes
Most home connections use a dynamic address, which can change when your router restarts or after your provider reassigns it. Switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or turning a VPN on or off, also changes the address websites see.
How to find your private (local) IP address
- Windows: open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig, then look for "IPv4 Address". - macOS: open Terminal and run
ipconfig getifaddr en0for Wi-Fi. - Linux: run
ip addrin a terminal. - Android and iPhone: open the Wi-Fi settings and tap your connected network.
How to change or hide your IP address
The simplest ways are to restart your router (which may give you a new dynamic address), connect through mobile data, or use a reputable VPN. A VPN replaces the address websites see with the VPN's own. To confirm it is not leaking your real address, run our WebRTC leak test.
Frequently asked questions
What is an IP address?
An IP address is a number that identifies your connection on the internet, like a return address on a letter. Websites use it to know where to send the pages you request.
What is the difference between a public and a private IP address?
Your public IP address is the one websites see, and it is shared by every device on your home network. Private addresses, such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x, are used inside your home network only and are never visible to websites.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.9 and there are only about 4.3 billion of them. IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::1 and were created because IPv4 addresses are running out.
Why does my IP address change?
Most home internet providers assign a dynamic IP address that can change when your router restarts or after a period of time. Using a VPN or switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data also changes the address websites see.
Can someone find my exact location from my IP address?
An IP address usually reveals only the general area of your internet provider, such as a city or region, not your street address. Only your provider can link an IP address to your account.
Is it safe to share my IP address?
Sharing it with a website you visit is normal and unavoidable. Avoid posting it publicly, since it can be used to target your connection with attacks or to guess your general location.
