Is Your Internet Fast Enough for Video Calls?

A video call needs roughly 1-4 Mbps in each direction, so most plans cope. What breaks calls is weak upload speed, high jitter and a busy network, not a lack of download speed.

What each kind of call needs

Call typeDownloadUpload
One-to-one, standard video1-2 Mbps1-2 Mbps
One-to-one, HD (720p)2-3 Mbps2-3 Mbps
Group meeting, HD3-5 Mbps2-4 Mbps
Screen sharing, add+1-2 Mbps+1-2 Mbps

These are rough figures that vary by app and settings. If several people in your home call at the same time, add their numbers together. About 10 Mbps of upload comfortably covers two or three concurrent calls.

The numbers that matter most

  • Upload speed: your video is sent out, and many plans have far lower upload than download.
  • Jitter: keep it under about 30 ms. High jitter causes choppy audio and frozen video. What is jitter?
  • Ping: under 100 ms feels natural. Above 150 ms people start talking over each other.
  • Stability: lost data or lag under load, which the bufferbloat test checks.

Why video freezes on fast internet

A big download speed does not help if your upload link is full or your Wi-Fi is unstable. Common causes are cloud backups running during calls, someone uploading video, weak Wi-Fi far from the router, and a router that queues too much data (bufferbloat).

How to make calls smoother

  1. Use Ethernet, or sit closer to the router on 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  2. Pause cloud backups and large uploads during meetings.
  3. Close other video apps and browser tabs that stream.
  4. Lower the video quality in the call app if the connection is weak.
  5. Turn on SQM or QoS in your router if it offers it.

Frequently asked questions

How much upload speed do I need for Zoom?

About 1 to 4 Mbps per call for standard to HD video. If several people in the home call at once, add the numbers up. 10 Mbps of upload comfortably covers two or three concurrent calls.

Is 10 Mbps enough for video calls?

For download, yes. For upload, 10 Mbps usually handles one to three calls, provided nothing else is uploading at the same time.

Why does my video freeze when my internet is fast?

It is usually jitter, weak Wi-Fi or a busy upload link, not low speed. Check your jitter and bufferbloat, and try a wired connection.

What ping is acceptable for video calls?

Under 100 ms feels natural. Above 150 ms people start talking over each other.
